When Confederate Lieutenant Andy Blanks investigates sounds from the woods his pickets think are ghosts, he discovers a wounded soldier. To his surprise, the soldier is his former lover, Samuel Talley, who he'd last seen heading west and who had promised to send for him when he was settled. Only Sam is injured, and in the dull glow of his lantern, Andy discovers his lover wears the blue coat of a Union soldier, as well.
